2017.01.29 04:09 Azzizzi Maybe I’m unclear on the concept of “guest towels”

I guess I’m unclear on the concept of “guest towels” on someone’s house. This came to light when I went to my wife’s aunt’s house one time. My wife’s aunt (Janet) was as “uppity” and pretentious as anyone else in my wife’s family and maybe even more so. Even my wife thought her aunt was pretentious. If she thought so, that was really saying something because my wife was also very pretentious. Also, if you said or did something in this woman’s presence that wasn’t to her liking, you were bound to hear about it again very soon, and not just once, but again and again. That’s what this story is about.
My upbringing was a lot different from my wife’s family. I grew up in poverty. I’m not ashamed of having been poor. It’s not my fault I was born into poverty, but I’m also not Michael Landon’s version of Charles Ingalls, so I don’t celebrate or cherish poverty or cling to it like being poor and having nothing is better than actually having things. Growing up, I heard a lot of people say, “Money can’t buy you happiness.” Just about every time I heard it, this was immediately after seeing someone who did have money and seemed to be happy about something. Granted, I will say that there is not a one-to-one correlation between money and happiness in all cases, but I would also say that there is also no evidence of an inverse relationship between the two, as so many would interpret that statement.
For me, poverty was an experience I would rather not experience again. To get away from poverty, I joined the military. At the age of 17, I was in Marine Corps Boot Camp and I can assure you, I was amazed and pleased that I was not only allowed to eat three square meals a day (as much food as you can eat), but I was also given a bunk with clean sheets and adequate heating/cooling that I didn’t have to pay for and all I had to do in return was follow orders and do as I was told. To me, this was just incredible.
My wife, on the other hand, had been raised with a silver spoon in her mouth. She’d never suffered for anything. When we met, she was still driving the car her father had bought her when it was new. At that point, I’d never even owned a new car of my own and it would be another few years before I would be able to buy a car new for the first time.
One of the worst lifetime experiences my wife told me about in her childhood was when her dad refused to rent her and her friend a limousine to go to one of the many concerts they attended together. I had to clarify this with her because at one point, it sounded like she was telling me that her parents would buy them tickets to concerts almost every weekend one summer and would fly them to the concert, rent hotels, and a limousine. My wife assured me that this was the case. I don’t think I ever would have heard about this at all if it had not been for the one exception where my father-in-law refused to rent a limousine to take the girls from the hotel to the concert. So, to finalize my point, while I was concerned with where I would get my next meal, my wife had been concerned with how often she could ride in a limousine.
After we were married, I got out of the military and move to California and got a job there. It was a decent job for someone of my few and limited skills, but it offered a lot of room for advancement, too, so I made the most of it.
In the early years of the marriage, I struggled to fit in with my wife and her family. They had their own notion of how everything should be and how everyone should interact, and they had very little tolerance for me and my backward ways. This was nothing new for me. Even as a poor person, I didn’t really fit in and had to learn a lot of manners as I went along. Before I was married, I already knew my weakness was that I had been born and raised in poverty, so I had no idea what it was like to live in a family where poverty was not daily issue. As much as I tried to fit in, my wife had no idea and no tolerance for dealing with someone like me.
My wife and her sister generally laughed at me and made fun of me the same way they’d done my brother-in-law, Joe. He’d married my wife’s sister a few years before my wife and I had gotten married and they’d already established a pattern of treating Joe like shit every chance they could. This extended to the rest of the family, too. Since Joe’s own wife shat on him, the cousins and aunts and uncles also shat on him.
Joe had been raised not too far from where I’d lived in Texas, so he and I had a lot in common. Our schools had even been sports rivals and I could remember a lot of details about the teams Joe played for, which was always fun to talk about. Joe and I had both been in the military, too, and he and I had both spent some time outside the US at various places in the world, so it was a bit odd to me that the two women who had always lived at home until they were married and had hardly been out of the country were both making fun of a guy who has spent four years traveling the world.
When they tried this approach on me, I guess they thought they were going to put me in the same position as Joe, but I wasn’t having it. Sure, I may have been a poor bumpkin, but that doesn’t mean I was going to sit still and let someone talk shit to me about it the rest of my life. At this time, I’d already spent more than four years living in other countries myself. Despite the travels, I realized I didn’t know a whole lot about blending in with a family that didn’t suffer from poverty, so I paid attention and tried my best not to cause a scene or do anything completely out of line with what my wife’s family would think of as the norm.
I believe my ability to learn and take things in would have gone a lot more smoothly if I’d had the benefit of having someone less like my wife contributing to my “learning.” She was hardly ever helpful, even when she was trying to be, like at times when I wanted to understand more Spanish. One time, I heard someone on the radio say something like, “Numero uno in exitos.” I thought maybe that meant something like, “Number one hits,” or similar, so I asked her, “What does that mean?”
In all seriousness, she said, “Number one in exitos.”
“Right,” I said. “I could figure out the ‘numero uno’ part myself, but I didn’t know what the other part meant.”
“To know that,” She said, still serious. “You’d have to know what ‘exitos’ means.” And that was her trying to be helpful. Never mind when she took her normal approach of blaming and condemning first.
So, in some ways, like with the restaurant experiences I’ve mentioned in other stories, I blended in with the family fairly well. In other ways, I had some serious issues with the family, like when it came to things like coasters, silverware, and in particular the “guest towels.” This came into question when I visited Jaime and Janet’s house this particular time. I’m not a germophobe, but I do wash my hands every time I use the bathroom. If for no other reason, it’s a good courtesy to other people, especially when I’m going to shake hands or handle things that belong to others.
My wife and I were at Jaime and Janet’s house on one of our many visits there. I think we’d ordered a pizza and sat down to watch a movie. I went in to use the restroom. When I’d finished, I washed my hands and looked to dry my hands. All that was present was the rack with the ‘guest towels.’ Now, I had seen guest towels before and, if I had my choice, I wouldn’t use them. And, I’d been to Janet’s house several times before with the same experience – no towels in the guest bathroom except the ‘guest towels.’
On every previous visit, when I’d used the bathroom at this house and all that was there was the guest towels, I just wiped my hands on my pants, but on this particular visit, I said, “Fuck it,” and wiped my hands on the back side of these guest towels. I also have to point out that these were no ordinary guest towels. These things were as frilly as anything I had ever seen. There were roses embroidered into the towels and there were three-dimensional attachments of roses and ribbons. These things were really decorations and not functional towels, at least not on the front of the towels. That’s why I used the back of the towel to dry my hands.
After I left the bathroom, I thought nothing of it and returned to the den with everyone else. We were watching a phenomenal movie called, “The Truth About Cats and Dogs.” I remember it was this movie because my wife’s cousin, Yvette, kept saying one of the actresses looked familiar. I pointed out that this was Janeane Garofalo, but since I was the one who had said it, I had to be wrong and she couldn’t take that as the answer and had to refute what I was saying. She insisted that this was not Janeane Garofalo, but was Pamela Segall/Pamela Adlon, who had been in another movie we’d all seen together recently, called “Bed of Roses.”
As we were sitting in the den and watching this delightful movie (I don’t remember anything about the movie except how annoying Janeane Garofalo was in it), my wife’s Aunt Janet came into the room and asked my wife to leave the room with her. I had no idea what this was about at the time, but I would soon find out it was about me and what kind of asshole I am.
The other thing I remember about watching movies with my wife’s cousin was that we seemed to pause the movie a lot of times, many times unnecessarily, like if Yvette was reaching for a napkin, she had to pause it. If she needed to take a drink of soda, she would pause it. Someone sneezed, she would pause it to say “Salud!” Then, if my mother-in-law was there, she’d pause it again so my mother-in-law could say, “Dinero y amor” because, I guess “salud” isn’t good enough.
This made movies seem to last forever when I watched them with my wife and her cousin. This was still a lot better than another visit to Andy and Yvette’s house when they were intent on watching the MTV show “The Real World” non-stop for the entire visit. I think there was a Real World Marathon on, and even though they’d already seen every episode, they just HAD to watch the marathon, I guess.
Sitting through this mindless show was bad enough, but this was made worse by Andy’s constant narration of the show. For some reason, he thought I would get the references he was making to other characters on the show, but when I explained to him that I didn’t know anything about the show, that only made it worse. He’d mention someone named Puck, I guess, and I would say, “I don’t know who that is.” He then took it upon himself to fill all the time during the commercials with additional information about the characters and the show. Despite my numerous attempts, I couldn’t find a good way to impress upon him that I didn’t care about the show or any of the characters.
I think Andy was about as oblivious to his surroundings as his wife and my wife were at times. This was made clear one time when we were at my house while the wives were doing something. I had left the TV on the History Channel, which was showing some interesting things about technology in warfare. The show was just running in the background while we talked about nothing in particular. At one point, I saw something familiar on the screen. “Hey, that looks like my ship!” I said, but there were 12 ships in that class. The two of them I had been on were the most commonly seen of the two ships, so there was a good chance that this was one of those two. And, sure enough, when they showed a little more of the ship, I said, “Hey, that is my ship. I was on that ship when this was filmed.” As this went on for a bit, I said a thing or two more about the ship before Andy said, “Man, you act like you were actually there or something.” To that, I just had to stop and stare at him. I had nothing to say after that.
Fortunately, that kind of thing didn’t happen when we were watching this movie with the cats and dogs. While my wife was out of the room with her aunt, I had no idea what it was about, but Yvette got to talking to Andy about her plan to leave her current job for a different job, actually the same job, but for a different company. What I got out of this conversation was that Yvette was leaving the company she was working for to go to the same position with the same pay at another company, but this other company had a better brand image than the one she was currently working for. So, she was actually leaving a company with a job that had a commission structure so she could go to another company with the same commission structure because it had a better brand image, which meant she was going to go and lose money for a while as she built up her customer base again with this new company.
I’m sure I reasoned that I would prefer to stay at the company where I had longevity and seniority and people I knew rather than go to a new company where I had no idea about the work environment or the people I would be working with, but none of this mattered to Andy and Yvette. For them, image was everything and I’d just said the opposite. They looked at me like I just took a shit on the couch.
This was where my wife’s cousin and a lot of her friends were the same and none of them have changed. Just the other day, I was talking to my ex-brother-in-law, Joe. He was telling me how his wife is embarrassed to tell people where he works. He works for a big box store and has been for a number of years. From what he tells me, he makes good money, can pick his own hours, and has great benefits, but his family frowns on it because they think it’s not prestigious enough. He could be the janitor for Deloitte and they would be happy. If he was the CEO of Taco Bell, they would want him to move. For this very reason, for years, I’ve been hoping I would find a position somewhere like with McDonald’s in their corporate offices. I’d love to be able to tell my ex-wife and her cousins I work for McDonald’s or something very similar and have them talk shit about it.
When my wife returned to the room after leaving to talk with her aunt, she sat down beside me and gave me a nasty look. I had no idea what she was mad about and at this point in the relationship, there was still a fairly good chance that she was upset at me about something that would actually make sense, and she’d probably tell me sooner rather than later. This made me wonder. When I had gone to the bathroom, I made a Number One, but knowing my wife, they went in there with a microscope and found microscopic sprinkles in and around the toilet. That would be something they would do.
We sat and watched the rest of the movie and continued to hang out for a while longer. Then, when we left, everything seemed to be okay, at least until we got in the car. My wife didn’t hesitate, which I prefer to having her sit there and be mad at me and try to make me guess what she’s mad about, which is what she would eventually do most of the time in the later years of the marriage.
“Did you use the guest towel in the guest bathroom?” My wife asked me directly in one of the rare times she took this approach.
“Yes,” I said. “Isn’t that what it’s for?”
“You ruined it!” My wife said.
“I did?” I asked. “All I did was dry my hands on it.”
“My aunt showed me the towel. It’s completely ruined!” She informed me.
“Ruined?” I asked. “A tiny bit of water ruined the towel? Isn’t that what it’s for? Drying things?”
“Haven’t you been a guest at someone’s house before?” My wife asked. “It’s a guest towel. You’re not actually supposed to USE it.” Then, she seemed to have a revelation. “Oh, my God! When we go to other people’s houses, you’re not using THEIR guest towels, too, are you?”
“Usually, I don’t,” I said. “I’ve noticed that about your family and friends. They all seem to have things that are for looks, but aren’t functional.”
“I bet Aunt Janet is on the phone right now telling my mom what an asshole you are for using her guest towels,” My wife said.
“Come on,” I said. “I doubt she’s that petty.” I was wrong. Aunt Janet did call my mother-in-law and told her how much of an asshole I was for using her guest towel.
“You just don’t know how to fit in with a family that’s civilized,” My wife said. “You didn’t have any training as a child.”
“Yeah, I know,” I said. She was right to some extent. “My senior year of high-school, we were so poor, we only had one towel in the whole house.” This was true. I also had only four shirts and two pairs of pants to wear to school.
“See, that’s what I’m talking about,” My wife continued. “That’s why you don’t know things like guest towels and coasters and other nice things.”
“Coasters?” I said. “I know all about coasters.”
“But you put drinks down on a bare table,” My wife argued.
“When did I ever do that?” I asked.
“At my cousin’s house, at that barbecue,” My wife informed me.
“That was a picnic table. It was outside,” I argued.
“It doesn’t matter!” My wife insisted. “You do stuff like that all the time. It’s still a table no matter where it is.”
“It had a glass top on it,” I explained.
“What does that have to do with anything?” She asked.
“Glass, not wood,” I said.
“You don’t make any sense,” She said. “Civilized people don’t do things like that.”
“I can’t help it,” I said. “You’re right. My upbringing did affect me in that way.”
“That’s what I’ve been trying to say,” My wife said. “It’s about time you admitted it.”
“It’s not my fault you people have things that aren’t supposed to be used,” I said.
“Like what?” My wife asked.
“Guest towels,” I said. “Why do they call them ‘guest’ towels if the GUESTS aren’t supposed to use them?”
“But you’re NOT a guest,” My wife argued. “You’re part of the family.”
“I never would have thought of it like that,” I said, but then, that kind of made sense and explained why no one ever asked me if I wanted something to eat or drink when I visited my wife’s aunt’s house. “But, that doesn’t explain the other things no one is supposed to use.”
“What other things?” My wife asked.
“The other living room at your mom’s house,” I said. “It’s fenced off so no one can use it.” This was true, too. They had a fence that was custom-made to keep people from walking into that room and to keep them from sitting on the furniture in that room. When guests (more important than the immediate family) arrived, they folded the fence up and put it away. Even then, every time I walked in that room, even with the guests there, my mother-in-law watched every step I made in that room. I think she was expecting something to fall off my shoe or expected me to scuff the carpet on purpose. “Oh, and the fine China your mom has in that cabinet. I’ve known you 10 years and I’ve never seen anyone use that China.”
“It’s China. No one uses it. That’s what it’s for, to fill a China cabinet!” My wife laughed. “You seriously don’t know that?”
“You know I don’t know shit about your customs and traditions,” I said.
“I know,” She started laughing. “You remember when you thought a Himalayan was something you put your feet on? And you thought a Persian was a rug! And an Ottoman was a a a empire. Ha ha!”
“The Ottoman Empire,” I said.
“They’re cats, idiot. They’re all different kinds of cats. Maxine is a Persian!” She was referring to Yvette’s cat. Man, I thought that cat was ugly before, but then, it got some kind of skin infection and they had to take it to the vet to get shaved. When I saw it, I thought it was some kind of diseased rat.
“I don’t know anything about cats,” I said. “You know that.”
“You don’t know anything about anything!” My wife insisted.
“That’s not true,” I said. This still baffles me that she thought she knew more than I did/do. “It’s just the bullshit you know about doesn’t matter to anyone else but you and people like you.”
We’ve been divorced for nearly 13 years now and she’ll still try to come up with ways to make me look like I don’t know as much as she knows. Sometimes, she’ll have to stoop to things like, “You don’t even know when your son’s parent-teacher conference is and I scheduled it over a week ago without telling you, so what’s your excuse now?”
Okay, you got me.

2014.04.30 19:13 54monkeys Qualities of a good beach read & any recommendations?

After a disastrous experience with The Thorn Birds as my last year's beach read, I'm trying to plan ahead to ace this year's. I went back and read most of the beach read lists from the last two years. A compiled list is below to save other people the time. (The categories are really rough and M or F stands for Male or Female author, since I know some people are making a concerted effort to read more female authors.)
What I was really curious about though is how wide a range the suggestions were--everything from Clive Cussler to Dostoyevsky.
So, tell me, awesome readers, what qualities do you look for in a good beach/vacation read? And conversely, what have you hated about beach reads you've pursued in the past?
Also, any new suggestions are welcome! (I'll read anything but chick lit.)
Compiled list of Reddit's Beach Read Suggestions:
